Why can't I see sensitive content on X (or on iPhone)?

You turned on sensitive media on X and posts are still blurred, or the option isn't there at all. It's usually one of a handful of causes: the iPhone app, your age details, an age check, the search filter, or the post itself. Here's how to work out which one and fix it.

Quick answer: Tick Display media that may contain sensitive content on x.com (Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Content you see), make sure your profile has a correct birth date showing you're 18 or older, complete any age check X asks for, and if you're on iPhone, open the post on x.com instead of the app.

1. The setting is off (or was never changed)

Sensitive media stays behind a warning until you tick Display media that may contain sensitive content. X's Help Center lists it under Privacy and safety → Content you see (X Help: sensitive media). It saves automatically. Reload the page or reopen the app afterwards. Our step-by-step guide on turning sensitive content on or off shows where it is on each device.

2. You're on iPhone

This is the most common reason. The X app for iPhone and iPad doesn't include the sensitive media box, and X's Help Center tells iOS users to change media settings by signing in on x.com. There's a second limit too: X says some posts placed behind a sensitive-media warning can't be clicked through in X for iOS, even with the setting on.

  1. Open Safari (or another browser) and sign in at x.com with the same account.
  2. Go to Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Content you see and tick the sensitive media box.
  3. Close and reopen the X app.
  4. If a post in the app still has a warning you can't tap past, open that post on x.com in the browser.

3. No birth date, or a birth date under 18

X restricts people under 18, and people who haven't added a birth date to their profile, from viewing sensitive media. X said so directly in a submission to the UK regulator Ofcom (X's response to Ofcom). If the setting is missing, greyed out or doesn't seem to do anything, check your birth date:

  1. Go to your profile and choose Edit profile.
  2. Open Birth date and enter your real date of birth.
  3. Save, then try the sensitive media setting again.

Use your real birth date. X has a limit on how often it can be changed, and an account that's found to belong to someone under 18 stays restricted.

4. X needs to confirm your age

In some places a birth date isn't enough. In July 2025 X introduced age assurance to meet the UK's Online Safety Act, Ireland's Online Safety Code and EU rules (RTÉ News). X first tries to work out your age from signals it already has, such as account age or a previous verification. If that isn't conclusive, it asks you to confirm your age, for example with a selfie-based age estimate or a government ID. Until your age is confirmed, sensitive media may stay locked. If you think X got your age wrong, you can challenge it through X's support channels. Australia's online safety rules have led to similar checks there.

5. Search is filtering it

The media setting and search are separate. If sensitive posts are missing only when you search, open Search settings from the search screen and turn off Hide sensitive content. X turns Safe Search on automatically for users under 18, so this option may not change for teen accounts. X notes that search changes can take a few minutes.

6. It's not the sensitive media label at all

Some notices look like a sensitive warning but have a different cause, and the setting can't change them:

7. A glitch in the app or browser

If everything above checks out, try the basics: update the X app, sign out and back in, reload x.com, or clear the site data for x.com in your browser. Settings are stored on your account, so a stale session can show old behaviour for a while.

A quick checklist

  1. Sensitive media box ticked on x.com.
  2. Correct birth date on your profile, showing 18 or older.
  3. Any age check X asked for has been completed.
  4. "Hide sensitive content" off in Search settings, if the problem is search.
  5. On iPhone, the post opened on x.com rather than in the app.

If you're asking because your own photos look blurred to other people, that's a different problem. Our guide on why posts get marked sensitive explains it.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see sensitive content on X?

The usual causes are the sensitive media setting being off, using the iPhone app, a missing or under-18 birth date, a pending age check, or the search filter. Tick 'Display media that may contain sensitive content' on x.com, check your birth date, complete any age check, and open the post on x.com if you're on iPhone.

Why can't I see sensitive content on X on my iPhone?

The X app for iPhone doesn't show the sensitive media box, and X says some sensitive-media warnings can't be clicked through in X for iOS. Change the setting on x.com in Safari, reopen the app, and open any post that's still blurred on x.com.

Why is the sensitive content setting greyed out on X?

X restricts people under 18, or without a birth date on their profile, from viewing sensitive media, so the option can be missing or locked. Add your real birth date in Edit profile. In some countries X may also ask you to confirm your age.

I turned it on but search still hides sensitive posts. Why?

Search has its own filter. Open Search settings and turn off 'Hide sensitive content'. X turns this filter on automatically for users under 18, and changes can take a few minutes.

Can the setting show posts that are withheld or removed?

No. Withheld, removed, protected or reported posts, and posts hidden by your muted words, have their own notices that the sensitive media setting doesn't affect.
